The Animals Of Media Terra

Media Terra has many creatures that call it home that are not just the mythical inhabitants that you players control. Many of the creatures are every day live stocks and animals, such as cows and sheep and dolphins and eels and snakes and bears.

But there are just as many creatures of mysterious biology and abilities.

Within The Plainslands

Will O' The Wisps:

Though not monsters, these magical lights beckon those who see them into the forests of the centaur lands.

Black Dogs:

Black dogs supposedly stalk the dark streets of Ionad at night. They are evil spirits in a canine shape, and many consider them omens of death. They are supposedly huge black dogs with glowing eyes.

Stalla Taibhseil: "Cliff Ghosts"

The ghosts that haunt the eastern cliffs of the centaur lands. Oftentimes in the moonlight, you can find these ghosts still at war with each other. Because the remnants of the Harpy-Centaur war were never cleared from the cliffs or forest, they're left to reenact the atrocities of their final days under starlight.

Within The Northern Isles

Hringsef:

Hringsef are the shapes floating above the horizon in the northern isles. Often seen as loved ones past, they beckon weary souls towards the ocean. The Outlyr lighthouse is meant to keep these spirits from reaching the Isles.

Spakur:

Spakur wanders the northern ice field, he is a great, ancient spirit of wisdom. Seeing Spakur is a gift of the north. Taking the form of a three-faced mammoth, Spakur is as old as the island itself.

He is as old as the snow and cold. His coat is wind-beaten, but he imparts his guidance upon those who find him in the tundra, often appearing in the depth of winter to comfort those nearing the end of their days.

Many have been found alive in the great footprints of Spakur, and those who've died in his presence pass peacefully into the afterlife.

Alfiofur: The thief.

Alfiofur are winged white fox, the ultimate thief of the isles. Alfiofur steal many a harpy's wares, mostly fish from the baskets, or scraps of meat from their sled. Alfiofurs are nuisances, but they've been known to even steal harpy eggs, robbing couples of their children.

Within The Crystal Seas

Astral Thread of the Ocean:

A large, bright blue and luminescent tube that appears on the Mer grounds seemingly over night. People don't know where they come from, or where they go after it mysteriously disappears after a few days, but it's a very powerful presence in the seas when it does appear.

It is one, large and long entity, no one can find it's starting point, or it's end point, and it tends to go from one end of The Drop Off to the other side and twists and curls on the way. And while it seems like just a big glowing tube, white eyes peer from all over it's form, ever aware of it's surroundings.

Long Neck:

Sometimes, coming up from The Drop Off itself, a creature of large size and terrifying features makes it appearance. Something with razor sharp teeth, a long neck, four flippers for speed, and a tail help it along.

Mermaids are to steer clear whenever one is found, and the mere sighting of one can have the Sovereign call for a lockdown of the nearest town.

Garden Jellyfish:

While something as terrifying as a Long Neck can arise from The Drop Off, so can something as beautiful and giving as the Garden Jellyfish. The Garden Jellyfish is a jelly that can come to be as large as a house and travels together by the thousands.

When the appear, the vast ocean at the edge of the Mermaid's territory is filled to the brim with them. Replacing the usually stingers of a jellyfish are seaweeds and, flowers of sorts, and even berries that can be picked as a delicacy.

The mers like to gather around for a picnic of sorts when news come of their arrival, and many find themselves frolicking and playing among their numbers.

Coral Crab:

Some crabs use shells to cover themselves, some found items, and other nothing at all, but the Coral Crab is a large crustacean that grows it's own home quite like the mers. They can easily be found to be the size of one's torso, and love to give people a little scare when they make mers think they're tending to a coral bed, SURPRISE! It's moving now!

Within The Crimson Sands

Figures In A Dust Devil:

These apparitions form and become the source of the larger sightings of Dust Devils in the desert. It is said these are the lost spirits of moons past taking form with the surrounding sand, having their hairs become the small tornado that is a dust devil.

There are known to move about peacefully and have a tendency to stare at travelers if they catch sight of them.

Burrowing Wyrm:

Not a wyrm by a traditional sense but these snakes of skeletal appearances make their homes in the glittering sands of the Crimson Desert. They're not undead, but finds bones of those who have perished in the desert to attach to themselves as armor and find moving below the surface they're main method of traveling.

Tumble Geckos:

These strange lizards use the dead bushes of the deserts as their home and way to quickly get around. No one is sure how but the Geckos have some influence on the winds that carpet the desert and have said winds push their Tumble Weed homes towards sources of water or to hunt.

They are quite large, growing to be as big as the length of one's arm, and tend to curl up within the tumble weeds once at that size.

Golem Tortoises:

Some large rocks of the desert may not just be a rock. Every once in a while, they are the slumbering forms of a Golem Tortoise, sleeping under the sands to keep cool with their shells being the only thing visible at these times.

They only come out at night, rising from the sands with their boulder of a shell and rocky skin. Their skin may look like rock, but it's actually just hardened scales to protect themselves. They can be found wandering about under the moonlight with their glowing yellow eyes seen through the darkness.
