Welcome to the Lore FAQ!

Because Media Terra is also an experiment in world-building, we are aware that the nuances of the world will need expounding upon as you RP. To keep a record of the small details of the land, we've added this page.

Here we will record answers to your questions in the lore-questions discord channel.

How does Currency work? Is there a specific type of Currency?

The island has a largely trade-based economy, but there is a currency. Referred to simply as "Gold" the currency is comprised of coins of various values.

Harpies do not produce any coinage and are more apt to accept direct trade of goods. This is changing as they're beginning to participate in the island's economy.

Centaurs have their own set of coins with the sovereign's family crest stamped on them ( barley crossed with an ax). They also readily accept coin based trade in the kingdom.

Mermaids are perfectly content with using the currencies of other kingdoms for their own inner transactions. This is mostly due to it being difficult to have a running heat source to melt down metals for their own coins.

Nagas produce a large number of their own coin, being as massive of a forge nation as they are. Engraved on their bits are spiraling horns with diamond shapes surrounding them, the signature features of the sovereign family.

How do accents and languages work?

Each kingdom has a unique accent to it! This is because the kingdoms all originally had their own languages before converting to Customary, the standard language of the RP group. For convenience's sake, it's English in the real world.

It is advised that if you'd like your characters to have a conversation in one of these languages to simply state they aren't speaking Customary as opposed to having an entire RP via google translate

Centaurs

Centaurs are largely based on Celtic culture. They have two prevalent accents. The Dunland Accent sounds Irish and the Berwick/Ionad accents sound Scottish, though the rural Berwick accent is distinctly heavier.

Their historic language is Bruidhinn and it is rarely spoken in the modern-day. Some older centaurs still know it, and occasionally teach it to the younger folk. It can be used in ceremonies and old songs but Customary is the most common language spoken, especially in Ionad which sees plenty of trade from the rest of the Island. If you'd like to use a few words in Bruidhinn, you can use a Scottish Gaelic translation.

If you want to get real technical with it, feel free to use Scottish Gaelic for characters from Ionad and Berwick and Irish (Gaeilge) for those from Dunland.

Harpies

Harpies are based on an amalgamation of arctic places. Inspiration was drawn from Inuit, Nordic, and Siberian cultures. Their language is called Nordur, which if you'd like to write in, feel free to use Icelandic. ( I choose not to use an Inuit or Greenlandic language to avoid appropriating the cultures of indigenous peoples)

Unlike the other Media Terra languages, Nordur is still common in the Isles due to the location's historical isolation. Harpies are expected to be fluent in Nordur and Customary, though some older harpies may still struggle with the later.

Harpies have Nordurian accents, which can sound Icelandic for reference. They usually try to achieve a more "neutral accent" when learning Customary.

Mermaids

The Mermaids don't have a certain culture they follow but their accents are similar to those of England and Wales. The accents of the British are there and the Mers have two languages that are accepted in their kingdom, Khirdem, and Undi. Khirdem was the spoken language of their old times, which there are some who still hold true to their roots and speak it, the mass majority of which would be higher class individuals in Cerminum.

The way to write would be using Welsh.

Undi on the other hand is still very much used and a common language among the Mer folk. This is due to the fact, that Undi is their underwater language. Normal speaking does not transfer well underwater, unfortunately, and would require pretty much screaming right next to each other to even start to comprehend the other's words. So instead a form of high pitched chirps and clicks is used, much like dolphins, to communicate underwater.

There isn't any good way of writing this form of communication, so if one would like to convey that Undi is being used have the words be italicized.

Nagas

Being stationed in a sandy biome, they of course have ties to areas of the real world that are also found in deserts. They have accents found in Egypt and their respective mother tongue is called Coriq. Unlike the Mers, their language is pretty much forgotten by much of the population, only elders and linguists of the empire knowing how to speak it. The Nagas are a race of logic and efficiency and find no use in practicing a language that isn't used during commerce.

If you'd like to have your character speak it you would write it by using Arabic.
