Crystal Seas

Oh What A Life It Is

To live under the sea in a whole new world that the other races cannot reach, it's a pretty free life. It's would be safe to say that the Merfolk have it easiest out of all the races, having uncontested territory, most weathers being void underwater and not really having to worry about sustenance, food or water.

Though they are not without their problems! While food is ample most of the time, it's a careful balance the Mers have to keep, else they scare all the fish away and they refuse to come back into their circle, and they have many more predators to worry about unlike the other races. And the one weather problem they do have would be during storms that shake the sea, causing underwater tumult of which will blind the mers with sand and possibly destroy their homes. A big mess to pick up after.

But it will all be alright, Mers are known for their companionship and for helping one another to get through the day. Whatever life throws at them they'll all do it together at the very least!

A Race As One

The Merfolk consider themselves to be one overall unit together, a sort of hive of bees who all work together to keep life going. A school of a thousand fish that try to simply make life easier for everyone.

There is quite the effort to keep everyone organized, the entire society having 'work shifts' of morning, afternoon, evening and night to fulfill needs of the cities. One could even mistake the Mers to have some sort of hive mind with how well they go about things.

But this is a society of routine. With having their lives scheduled as they are, they are susceptible to being extremely distressed and thrown into confusion if something were to butt in and change the routine, it'll spread and everything will come to a grinding halt.

Salty Herds, Salty Schools

There are entire reefs filled to the brim with schools of fish of all kind, and there are even sea mammals that float around in the shallows.

The Mers themselves usually hunt from the wild, using ships they've help build, or rented from the central harbor to bring large quantities of fish in to sell or to float over drop points for their own kind. There are also farms, domes that looks like massive jellyfish that was formed from magic, where many species are fish are bred, raised and then harvested.

There are a few other kinds of farms that are prominent for mammals of the seas, such as Dugongs and Seals for their meat, oils and hides, or if people get attached, pets! While the Mers have no use for the hides of their creatures, the other races sure have ways of using them! So are sold along with the sea food they provide.

A Side Business

Fish aren't the only things the mermaids bring to the table. They are quite low when it comes to ground level, which means they're susceptible to finding ores that the other races can't reach.

While it isn't a priority for them to be drilling around, there is one major mining site that resides in the one ravine that spans across their territory.

This occupation is much more dangerous than anything else in the kingdom, having the kick up of debris terribly ruining their gills if their guards fail, the ravine being temperamental and possibly having torrents that could bash workers like rag dolls, and, of course, cave-ins.

Some Molten Lore

Kukilie was not always where it currently is on the map. Once upon a time, it used to be a quaint little settlement right next to the volcano of Media Terra, Mount Onyx. The first Kukilie was blessed with constant warm waters which promoted quite the beautiful environment, all thanks to the vents the volcano hosted. This was before the Nagas dug and punctured the volcano for their own uses, and thus was silently building up in what was to be a disaster.

It happened at night, when everyone was either asleep or tending to duties that needed to be done during twilight hours. There were rumbles, the vents were getting hotter, and a feeling of doom coating the village. And, as you can imagine, the volcano erupted.

It happened quick, the volcano's cap doing nothing to stop the magma that rose, and it made a boom that could be heard across the entire island. The lava came fast, and so did the ash, rolling into the water and massive rocks from the initial pop rained from above. The Merfolk weren't as safe as they would have liked to think, and there was chaos as they swam for their lives.

Both the Nagas and Mermaids were heavily affected by the eruption of Onyx, losses from both sides. The Mers had lost lives to fall rocks and those who never woke up in time, and the entirety of Kukilie, a village buried in ash and rock, that is now lost to time.

The survivors, after some moments of reprieve, founded a new Kukilie on the other side of the island. The Mers left to be forever weary of the mountain even with the promises that the Nagas have reigned it in.
