Taboos & Social Standards
Gender and Sexuality
Sexism: Centaurs often have semi-rigid standards pertaining to gender. A typical family consists of a man who works upon the farm and woman who maintains the home. This is largely due to the agricultural nature in which life is based. Women are not outlawed from taking typically male positions, but it will be more difficult to achieve success in those fields.
Standards Pertaining to Gender:
-
Women taking lead in the household will often result in the belief that her husband is weak and cannot sustain the family.
-
Masculinity is often seen as an undesirable trait in women, as femininity is seen as undesirable in men.
-
Draft horses are typically known to produce unattractive women, and ponies pathetic small men.
-
-
Many of the stricter notions are not held by younger generations, but the notions are still common enough to be well known in the kingdom.
Sexuality: In centaur culture, sexuality is a highly contentious topic. It is often the opinion that a homosexual proclivity is outright shameful, and at the best should be kept to oneself. Marriages of the same gender are rare, and not often spoken about in official terms. Often times one's affections towards the same sex can be toted as a nasty rumor, and in the worst of cases can destroy one's career.
Opinions on the topic range wildly between individuals. Some families seem to not mind at all, but the general opinion is a negative one. The current Sovereign has not addressed the situation, but does not seem to bear animosity towards those of marginalized sexualities.
Standards Pertaining to Sexuality
-
Often time the insinuation of being anything other than heterosexual is a taboo in and of itself.
-
Women who take up masculine careers are often accused of being lesbians, and vise versa.
-
Outside the kingdom, centaurs have been known to mention their sexuality, though not without a decent amount of trepidation in doing so.
-
These prejudices are especially strong within the aristocracy.
-
Gossip about fake marriages, scandals between two men, or the notoriously masculine Marshal pervade the kingdom's upper echelon.
-
Food and Dining
Eating Meat
Eating meat is an odd topic. Many centaurs are both physiologically and emotionally adverse to eating it. A large proportion of centaurs are intolerant towards meat in the way many humans are intolerant of lactose.
Socially, eating meat is often thought of as "odd" or even uncivilized. You will rarely find meat served in the dining halls of the upper class, but in times of scarcity farmers have been known to eat their livestock if desperate enough. Never having eaten meat is a status symbol, as it often means one can afford never to stoop so low.
Marriage
Marriage is a complicated thing. Some marry for love, it is common enough, though it is equally common for one to marriage for a financial or social advantage. Marriages outside of ones class are not common, as aristocracy are often adverse to "marrying down".
Sometimes, marriages are arranged in order to create ties within prominent families.
Standards Pertaining to Marriage
-
Those in the upper class who are not married before they turn 30 are usually assumed to be... odd. Why aren't they married? Its simply unnatural?
Kingdom Relations
Harpies
Relations between harpies and centaurs are better now than they have ever been, but they have always been quite awful.
Ever since the war, harpies and centaurs have never been on good terms. Harpies reputation of being greedy and conniving proceeds them in the Plainslands, and it is something
Centaur Religion
"The fear of god fuels everyone."
Religion is at the heart of Centaur society. Though not a theocracy, almost every other aristocratic family has its hands in the church in one way or another.
The religion's origins are not known, other than it being an amalgamation of both the harpy traditional beliefs and those of the centaur's.
The centaur religion is centered upon two things: The Creeds and the Article.
The Creeds
Known as The Creeds, this is a collection of religious oaths centaurs make throughout their lives. Each Creed is devoted to a different god, and each serves a different purpose.
Here is a list of some of the Creeds, as well as their corresponding gods:
All those marked with a * are considered obligatory
-
* Creed of Thoil
-
This is the first Creed one ever makes, and it is a vow to Thoil, the god of Strength. It is often said before the age of 10 and is the most important Creed. This is a promise to avoid moral sin, repent against the unnatural and revere the sacred. It prohibits against the classic sins of: Lust/Sodomy, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Ego.
-
The creed of Thoil is where centaurs find their bigotry towards those who do not abide by classic ideals of sexuality and gender.

-
Creed of Teallach
-
Teallach is the goddess of the home. This creed is said by parents before they have children. It is a vow to their children and family, though often times this creed is interpreted differently by different parents.

-
The Warrior's Creed / The Creed of Curaid
-
Curaid is the god of war, and this is said in his name. This creed warns against using violence unjustly, campaigning for ones religion, and respecting the power one holds as a soldier. It also deems allowances to soldiers when their duty calls for the taking of a life.
